Images courtesy of THK Gallery Founded in 2018, THK Gallery is one of the newer galleries to join Cape Town’s rapidly growing art scene. The gallery director and founder, Frank Schönau, is a German photographer who’s disciplinary background influenced THK’s early days as a space dedicated solely to photographic works, representing the likes of Johno Mellish and the hugely influential Douglas Kirkland. It was the first gallery in Cape Town then to do so.
Since joining forces with Christie’s-trained auctioneer Linda Pyke in 2020, THK has evolved into a more wide-ranging and conceptually provoking platform, representing an array of mid-career and emerging voices working in painting and sculpture. Despite the diverse array of styles and mediums found in the gallery’s artistic repertoire, an underlying current that binds them all is a shared commitment to innovative material exploration, presenting new ideas around different South African art forms to both local and international audiences.
The gallery likewise has a space in Cologne that they refer to as an ‘experimental space.’
‘Housed in a transformer station [in Cologne], we curate conversations between emerging and established artists from Africa and Europe, to engage with and explore our evolving visual language.’
